Les meules d’Acy-Romance (Ardennes), La Warde

Abstract : The querns of the settlement of Acy-Romance, France, studied in part by Cl. Pommepuy, constitutes a unique assemblage because the village was entirely excavated and all the lithic fragments were systematically recorded and preserved. The site was occupied from La Tene C2 to the Augustan period. Most of the querns, however, come from features dated to La Tene D or, to a lesser extent, La Tène C2. The petrography of the querns varies. Limestone is clearly the dominant rock before it was relegated by sandstone and other more incidental rocks. Upper Lutetian limestones are the most common. The fragmentation is noteworthy : 1000 fragments of which 600 are Lutetian limestone, as well as 350 quern fragments (18 saddle querns, 175 rotary querns and 91 undetermined). The earliest rotary querns, associated with saddle querns, date to La Tene C2. C. Pommepuy had indicated that tronco-conical rotary querns with a deep central hoppers (type 3) decreased over time in favour of cylindrical querns with either shallow receptacles (type 2) or deeper hoppers (type 1). These observations, confirmed by our study, coincide with the transition of mills combining flat or convex-based lower stones (meta) with type 3 upper stones (catillus), and mills combining conical lower stones (meta) with type 1 and 2 upper stones. The distribution of the different types of querns (and their fragments) and burnt elements is practically homogeneous at the site, suggesting a phase of abandonment related the site’s destruction.
