Transport de magma par fracturation hydraulique à travers la lithosphère terrestre

Abstract : Magma transport through dykes has been studied by means of small-scale laboratory experiments, in which aqueous solutions of various density and viscosity were injected into gelatin solids used as an analogue for crustal rocks. Indeed, in situ measurements of Young's modulus and fracture toughness of gelatin solid verify its elastic and brittle behaviour at laboratory scale is the same as that of rocks through which dykes propagate. Experimental results highlight the importance of the fracture resistance of the host solid as a mechanism that controls dyke propagation and suggest that time-dependent failure of the solid is length-scale dependent rather than a material property. Moreover, these experiments show that if gas exsolve during propagation, they can separate from the main liquid-fissure and thus provide a mechanism for precursor volcanic eruptions.
